The Sinner

Author: Petra Hammesfahr
ISBN: 9780143132851
Publisher: Penguin

Summary

On a sunny summer afternoon by the lake, Cora Bender stabs a man to death. Why? What would cause this quiet, kind young mother to stab a complete stranger in the throat over and over again, in full view of her family and friends? For the local police, it’s an open-and-shut case. Cora quickly confesses and there’s no shortage of witnesses, but those questions remain unanswered. Haunted by the case, the police commissioner refuses to close the file and begins his own maverick investigation. So begins the slow unraveling of Cora’s past, a harrowing descent into a woman’s private hell. A dark, spellbinding novel, where the truth is to be questioned at every turn.

About the Author

Hailed as Germany’s Patricia Highsmith, Petra Hammesfahr has written more than twenty crime and suspense novels, and also writes scripts for film and television. She has won numerous literary prizes, including the Crime Prize of Wiesbaden and the Rhineland Literary Prize. Her breakthrough novel, The Sinner, was a major critical and commercial success internationally, including in Germany, where it stayed on the bestseller list for more than fifteen months. The Sinner has been adapted for television as a limited series on USA starring Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman.

My Review

I decided to purchase this book after being completely enamored with the limited series on USA. It was an amazing show, if you haven’t watched it, go binge those 8 episodes -you won’t regret it!!

As for the book, it is equally amazing. It does follow the show fairly closely but we do see a lot more of the abuse that Cora has gone through as she grew up and the way she came to be. I feel like the show was more about someone else inquiring into Cora’s actions that day on the beach, but the book explains to us how Cora was raised and really answers everything amazingly well. The show did too and I honestly can’t compare them as far as quality goes.

Normally, a show is either better or worse than the book, and while I would love to say that the show was better simply because the English wasn’t the greatest for the book as it was translated from German, the story itself is equally as compelling and forces you to keep turning the page. If you love one you will love the other.

I am looking forward to reading other books by Hammesfahr that are translated to English.

The basis for the “instantly gripping” (Washington Post) limited series on USA starring Jessica Biel, The Sinner is an internationally bestselling psychological thriller surrounding an unexplained murder

On a sunny summer afternoon by the lake, Cora Bender stabs a complete stranger to death. Why? What would cause this quiet, kind young mother to commit such a startling act of violence in front of her family and friends?

Cora quickly confesses and it seems like an open-and-shut case. But the police commissioner, haunted by these unaswered questions, refuses to close the file and begins his own maverick investigation. So begins the slow unraveling of Cora’s past, a harrowing descent into the depths of her own psyche and the violent secrets buried within.

A dark, spellbinding novel where the truth is to be questioned at every turn, The Sinner is now a smash summer hit, with the TV series hailed as one of the best new shows of summer.

“As I read [the novel], I kept going, ‘I know where this is going—there’s no way this could be interesting.’ And then it would just take a completely different direction.” —Jessica Biel

“The Sinner is unnerving and weird and guaranteed to stick with you weeks later.” —Sarah Weinman, editor of Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives and Women Crime Writers

“Hauntingly insightful and sensitive.” —The Guardian

As some people know, I am in love with the tiny house movement and have been considering building my own. In doing so I have also been looking at awesome storage options to help keep things neat and tidy. My parents kitchen is also over 20 years old and in need of an update, so looking at kitchen stuff that is multipurpose, saves space, looks great and is functional has been something I have been doing. If you look at my YouTube you will see I have liked about a zillion organizing and tiny house videos recently. So, I was excited to stumble across this website, ovisonline.com

I had never heard of OVIS and when I clicked that link and saw the Kitchenaid Mixer on a pull out counter/shelf and baskets in drawers I was immediately in awe!!! I am so excited to start pinning ideas from this site and more importantly, excited for when I do get to do some reno’s (big or small) because there are definitely some amazing ideas that this company has come up with that I would absolutely LOVE to implement into my home!

If you are doing a kitchen renovation or are looking for more space leave me a comment and let me know if this site has given you any ideas!!!

Lemon + Sage My Current Favorite Scent!

Last winter I started to use the Bliss Spa body butter on my dry chapped skin. It is the FIRST lotion I have ever been able to use with success! Throughout the summer I actually used the body butter as a shaving lotion, and didn’t have any irritation from the razor on my extremely sensitive skin!

Pro’s:

  • Smells amazing -I have used White Pepper + Blood Orange as well as Lemon + Sage and they both smell like fresh cut fruit, I have been tempted to taste it!
  • Non-greasy. Yeah I know, all lotions make this claim, but this one actually follows through. It actually goes on and is dry immediately, which works great for me because I live in Canada and do NOT appreciate having moist skin in the chilled air! This is a body butter I use regularly on my entire body, on my hands after dishes and even on my face and lips when they are extra dry with no irritation or breakouts!
  • A little goes a long way
  • You can use a lot but still not feel greasy if you accidentally squeeze out too much
  • It comes out thick and melts in with a few quick rubs
  • The scent lingers, but not for too long and is not overwhelming -simply smells clean and doesn’t compete with perfume or other fragrances
  • Works as a shaving lotion – I use this on my legs and underarms before I shave and have no irritation, regular shaving creams or gels cause irritated and burning red bumps
  • Comes in several sizes and is great for the whole family
  • Companion products like shower gel and body wash in the same scents

Con’s:

  • It’s a bit pricey when you need a new one, but it definitely lasts long enough to make it worth the price (they do offer coupon codes and deals on sets if you sign up for their email)

I absolutely love Bliss body butter and it gets 5 bright shiny stars. I have some on my bedside table as well as in the bathroom and as the weather cools down one will be placed in my purse! It is awesome to not have to keep looking for that holy grail of lotions anymore and even more awesome to have skin that isn’t chapped and painful!

I have been looking to finish the basement living room, it needs paint and some lighting, okay a lot of lighting, as it doesn’t have any natural light. I have hopped over to the home and patio décor center website and have been looking at photos looking for inspiration.

The Home and Patio Decor Center has everything from bedroom furniture to outdoor lighting and patio umbrella’s. They also have indoor and outdoor fireplaces. I am feeling so excited to get this basement project of mine finished and this site has everything I could possibly need and more to get a bright, yet classic look that will make the room inviting.

Another thing that excites me is the storage options that they offer. Since the basement is unfinished there is NO CLOSET SPACE at all which isn’t the best. I struggle to keep things looking clean and put away when there is no where for storage so anything that is beautiful and acts as storage is a definite plus!

Check out this website, you definitely will not be disappointed and you will likely find some fun stuff that speaks to your personal style.

Whether your style is American Farmhouse or ultra modern I am 100% certain that this amazing site has everything you could possibly want and more!!

With school season coming to a close for most people now is the time to purchase an instrument for your child so they can keep up with their favorite artform and get better throughout the summer months. You won’t regret purchasing from Yamaha. Known for years for their high quality and long lasting performance Yamaha is a household name and a no brainer. I definitely suggest hopping over to yamaha yas-475 review to read more about their Sax and other instruments so come September when school is back in session, your child is ahead of the class!!
