The 10 Commandments of Marriage
Practical Principles to Make Your Marriage Great

By: Ed Young
Published by: Moody Publishers
Estimated Publication date: October 1, 2014
ISBN: 9780802412249

Description

Marriage is God’s idea. He planned it. He designed it. And if you follow His blueprint, it will be more rewarding, more loving, more exciting than you ever imagined.

In 10 Commandments of Marriage, Dr. Ed Young shares the “thou shalts” and the “thou shalt nots” of successful relationships – straight from the pages of God’s Word. Long-married couples will find love-building precepts that will revive a failing marriage and make a great relationship even better. Soon-to-be-marrieds will discover what marriage is all about, and gain priceless insights into starting on solid ground.

In words that are profound, often humorous, but always biblical, Dr. Young draws from decades of counseling couples to provide 10 commandments for a lifelong marriage that sizzles. God wants your marriage to be nothing short of incredible. And it could begin with this amazing book.

According to Beth Moore (bestselling author and speaker), “The 10 Commandments of Marriage not only tells you ‘what.’ Thankfully, it tells you ‘how.’ Ed Young has taken the principles of Scripture and has had the courage to test them on the linoleum glued to average life on planet earth.”

My Review

I absolutely loved this book and I recommend it to anyone who is in a relationship or plans to be in one at some point. I am sure I will be turning back to it time and again. It is well written, contains relevant stories and comparisons and most definitely ties the biblical teachings into the message.

While I don’t think you need to be a Christian to benefit from this book I do believe that Christians would benefit most from it because of the biblical references. We are shown time and again throughout the bible how a marriage should and shouldn’t be and Ed Young ties all of that information together, simplifies it, and makes it applicable to you and me.

I definitely recommend this book and because I received and e-copy for the purpose of review that isn’t “finalized” it will be in my shopping cart soon!

I don’t often give “glowing reviews” but this book energized me spiritually and showed me where I need to work on myself to be the best I can be for my partner.

50 Women Every Christian Should Know – Learning From Heroines of the Faith

By: Michelle DeRusha
Published by: Baker Books a division of Baker Publishing Group
Date: September 16th 2014
ISBN: 9780801015878

Description

The inspiring stories of the women who helped to shape our faith

Throughout history, countless women have boldly stepped out in faith and courage, leaving their indelible mark on those around them and on the kingdom of God. In lively prose Michelle DeRusha tells their stories, bringing into focus fifty incredible heroines of the faith. From Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Ávila, and Anne Hutchinson to Susanna Wesley, Harriet Tubman, and Corrie ten Boom, these admirable women live again under DeRusha’s expert pen. These engaging narratives are a potent reminder to us that we are not alone, the battles we face today are not new, and God is always with us in the midst of the struggle.

My Review

I really thought I would love this book, especially with the advanced praise it has received by so many people that I highly respect. However, I have to admit I didn’t like this book. It was a great historical reference but it definitely wasn’t something I would read for pleasure the way I had thought it would be. I had expected a book that helped me to tie my life to those through history and to feel encouraged by these 50 women, yet it felt a lot like I was reading a text book and I struggled to retain the information in it.

As a resource I think this book would make an excellent addition to your shelf, but I don’t recommend it as anything more than a text book.

Advance Praise

“This book is rich in inspiration and information. Reading it opened my eyes, broadened my vision, and challenged my faith. I highly recommend it to both men and women!”–Warren W. Wiersbe, author and former pastor of the Moody Church, Chicago

“Fifty women who teach us that famous isn’t about how many people know your name and that brave often looks like pressing on even when you’re afraid. My daughter and I are both indebted to Michelle for introducing us to many women we’d never met before and are sure never to forget.”–Lisa-Jo Baker, community manager for (in)courage and author of Surprised by Motherhood

“In the face of some of the same questions, temptations, and doubts we encounter today, these women were pioneers. Their stories give the church of today–men and women alike–a courageous and brave example of living faith and of living
out faith, the evidence of things unseen.”–Deidra Riggs, managing editor of The High Calling and founder of Jumping Tandem

“In this thoroughly researched and well-written work, Michelle DeRusha invites us into the lives of fifty women whose stories are our stories. This book inspired me, challenged me, and made me feel so proud to be a woman who belongs to Jesus.”–Jennifer Dukes Lee, author of Love Idol

About the Author

The Story of Santa Claus
By: Joseph McCullough
Published by: Osprey Publishing
Expected Publication Date: Oct 21 2014
ISBN: 9781472803429

Summary

Every December 24th millions of children eagerly await a visit from a large, bearded man in a red suit. But where did Santa come from and how did he evolve into today’s Jolly Old Saint Nick?

Well before the legendary poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ shaped the modern vision of Santa Claus riding a flying sleigh pulled by magical reindeer, his story actually began about seventeen hundred years ago in the Eastern Roman Empire. There, a young orphan named Nicholas became famous for using his inheritance to give gifts to the needy. In his most wildly-known story, he threw bags of gold over a wall into the house of a destitute merchant, so that the man would not be forced to sell his daughters into slavery. Eventually, this young and holy man became the Bishop of Myra and lived a life of faith and miracles, fighting injustice and protecting the weak. Even after his death, his miracles continued, and he is credited with saving sailors, healing the sick, and even raising the dead. In time, he became known as St. Nicholas the Wonder Worker.

In the numerous centuries since the passing of Saint Nicholas, his story has grown, developed, and been combined with numerous other legends. In the Netherlands, he became known as Sinterklaas, the old man who brought presents to children with the help of his assistant Zwarte Piet. In England, he became Father Christmas, the living embodiment of the holiday.

Fully illustrated with original color drawings, Santa Claus celebrates the story of his beginnings as a holy man in Ancient Rome, through his development in the Middle-Ages, to his current, likeness on advertisements, greeting cards, apparel and decorations – right down to real-life mall-based family photo opp. It is a winding, magical tale filled with mystery and good will towards all men, sure to fill even the most jaded scrooges with a little bit of Christmas magic.

A portion of all of the profits from this book will be donated to help disadvantaged children throughout the world.

My Review

I absolutely love this book and I think it will be a family favorite for generations as folklore and history mingle together and overcome 1700+ years of religion and cultural changes. This is a book that the Christian home school parent can use as a teaching aide or someone who is Atheist can use to understand the history of why we celebrate Christmas with this jolly fellow!

DOPPELGÄNGER is an adventure of murder, betrayal and chaos; one man’s loss – and discovery of personal identity. This novel blends scientific realism with technological fantasy, blurring the lines between fact & fiction. After the first few pages the reader will find themselves in a world at once both familiar yet bizarre and thrilling.

My Review

Doppelganger is an awesome and fun read that brings up the idea that many of us grew up with – that we have an  identical person to us somewhere on earth. This book is an interesting take on the idea of a Doppelganger and really is an edge of your seat book that takes you down the road of finding yourself. I definitely recommend this book and I believe one of my children has already decided that it will make great summer reading! Having heard of Doppelgangers from the TV show Vampire Diaries, the title immediately held their attention as it did mine and it didn’t fail to be a story of it’s own. Highly recommended!
